The lawsuit ended in forced settlements, resignations, and one criminal referral tied to fraudulent asset transfers after my mother’s death. My father was never charged over the accident. There was not enough. Maybe there never will be. But the civil findings destroyed him anyway. He was removed from the foundation board. Diane vanished from charity pages and museum programs. Lucas relocated to Texas and began introducing himself with his wife’s surname.
As for Nora and Micah, I bought the entire row legally through a separate trust and deeded their house back to them free and clear. Micah kept the bracelet for a while. When he was finally ready to hand it over, he placed it carefully in my palm and said, in the serious tone only children can manage, “Nana said it was yours. But I think it’s ours.”
He was right.
