I felt something cold settle in my stomach.

When Dana Pierce—my attorney—filed the civil action, my father called me nineteen times in one evening.
I answered on the twentieth.
His voice was calm, which meant he was frightened. “You are being manipulated.”

As for Nora and Micah, I bought the entire row through a separate trust and deeded their house back to them free and clear.

Micah kept the bracelet a while longer. When he was finally ready to hand it back, he placed it carefully in my palm and said, very solemnly, “Nana said it was yours. But I think it’s both of ours.”
